A serious accident recently occurred in Michigan that involved two vehicles, one driven by a high school football player, the other by a 40-year-old man. Several charges have been filed against one of the motorists in the suspected drunk driving case. The collision resulted in a fatality.
The older man is said to have prior convictions for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol. It has been alleged that he was behind the wheel of the car that crashed into the vehicle driven by the high school student in the recent fatal accident. The man was originally charged with offenses that carried a potential of up to 20 years in prison.
However, the charges were recently upgraded to second degree murder. This is reportedly due to authorities' review of the man's prior convictions from 1997. The upgraded charge carries a possible penalty of life in prison.
The man is currently being held in jail in lieu of a $1 million bond. Drunk driving in Michigan is a serious issue. Because every citizen is entitled to due process under the law, a person facing such charges is fully entitled to seek consultation with a criminal lawyer before proceeding to court. Acting under the guidance of a professional legal advocate would typically prove beneficial for someone who stands to face very severe penalties if convicted. A criminal lawyer would be able to assess an individual situation and fight to ensure that a defendant's rights are protected, as well as speak and act on his or her behalf in court.
