What are the Legal Penalties for Violent Crime? The seriousness of the violent crime will be taken into consideration when determining legal penalties. The nature of the crime as well as the extent of the victim’s injuries are evaluated. Less serious violent crimes may be prosecuted as a misdemeanor, which generally results in jail time of one year and fines. More serious felony violent crime charges, such as murder or kidnapping, could result in a prison sentence of five to ten years or more and fines will likely be ordered. Factors such as the use of a deadly weapon may further increase penalties. |
